UK PC system retailer PC Specialist have a rather extensive range of laptops in their portfolio, but they're always open to adding more if the design warrants it. Such is the case this week with the new 15.6" Fusion II, a gaming laptop with a refined, business-like aesthetic.
Most of PC Specialists notebook range have an all-black exterior, something that's a favourite of gamers but perhaps wouldn't tempt those with slightly different tastes. The Fusion II however makes use of a silver brushed-metal exterior and thin overall design measuring less than 2cm thick with the lid closed. It's sure to not look out of place taken to the office straight from a LAN gaming event.
PC Specialist's notebook range was updated to incorporate Intel's latest 8th Generation mobile CPUs earlier this year, and the use of cutting-edge Intel hardware continues here. The Fusion II is equipped with a Core i7-8750H, an impressive 6-core model with Hyperthreading to support a total of 12 independent threads. With more and more games and other applications broadening support to use multiple threads, including World of Warcraft in their next major patch (Patch 8.1), more cores is a great use of the available budget.
Complementing the CPU is the choice of either an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or GTX 1060 Max-Q. The GTX 1060 Max-Q is a more efficient version of the desktop GTX 1060 6GB, kept within a tight thermal envelope suitable for the laptop's cooling system.
Great graphics are, of course, required for a great screen. PC Specialist have opted for a 144Hz 1080p panel with slim 7mm bezel, giving the Fusion a sleek style that maximises screen real-estate. As a 144Hz panel it rewards high performance graphics, while colour reproduction is a creditable 72% of the NTSC colour-space.
It's also possible to match the other high performance components with high performance storage in the form of two M.2 SSDs. Up to 3500MB/s read NVMe M.2 SSDs are supported for blisteringly quick load and access times, while more affordable SATA-speed SSDs on the same M.2 interface are also options. Space limitations mean that 2.5" drives are not included as standard.
Rounding out the standard specs are a 4-cell 62WHr Li-Ion Battery, 720p webcam integrated into the screen frame, and wireless 802.11AC/B/G/N networking. Like all PC Specialist systems the Fusion II is highly and easily configurable, with options that include more memory and greater storage capacity.
