Samsung announces the release of its highest density SATA solid-state drive for datacentre applications – the Samsung PM833 8TB SSD. The new SSD offering packs LPDDR4 DRAM modules and features a 6-gigabit-per-second 2.5-inch SATA interface. The high-performance PM833 aims to speed up the transition of existing datacentres to SATA SSDs and bring the benefits of advanced V-NAND technology and higher densities to datacentres.
Makings of the PM883 SSD
The Samsung PM883 features 16Gb LPDDR4 DRAM based on the advanced 10nm-class process technology to create higher density drives. It also features SATA 3.3-compliant Power Disable (PWDIS) that enables power management in individual SSD units that boost the power efficiency of the datacentre it is installed, a new feature on Samsung datacentre storage solutions.
The PM883’s power-saving features enable the SSD to draw only 2.8 watts when reading and 3.7 watts when writing. The PM883 delivers speeds of up to 550 MB/s sequential read and up to 520 MB/s sequential write with random reads deliver up to 98,000 IOPS and random writes up to 28,000 IOPS. The PM883 has a writing endurance of 5466TB for the 3840GB drive and 10,932TB for the 7680GB drive.
Open Compute Project U.S. Summit 2018 Exhibit
Samsung will be joining the Open Compute Project U.S. Summit 2018 exhibit to demonstrate its latest offerings including the Samsung NF1 NGSFF storage solution for 1U rack servers along with the industry’s first 16Gb-based 64GB RDIMMs. Samsung plans to expand its lineup to include higher capacity 16Gb-based 128GB and 256GB RDIMM and LRDIMMs later this year.
