Samsung Electronics began the mass production of its first batch of 32GB SO-DIMM DDR4 for gaming notebooks. This new Small Outline Dual In-Line Memory (SO-DIMM) modules are based on the 10-nanometer class process technology that delivers memory with PC-grade performance with significantly more capacity, higher speeds and lower power consumption.

The new Samsung SO-DIMM are in 16GB modules with eight DDR4 DRAM chips mounted on the front and back. Kits can be as large as 32GB (2x16GB) which is 11% faster and 39% more energy efficient compared to the 20-nanometer class 8GB SO-DIMM DDR4 modules Samsung introduced in 2014. With such energy efficiency, gaming laptops powered by the new Samsung 32GB SO-DIMM DDR4 memory can have longer battery life for gaming or productivity.

The new 32GB SO-DIMM kits enable gaming laptops to reach speeds of up to 2,666 megabits-per-second (Mbps). A laptop fitted with two 32GB DDR4 module kits, a total of 64GB, consumes less than 4.5W in active mode and less than 1.4W when idle. With the new Samsung SO-DIMM DDR4 memory, power usage is reduced by 39% when active and 25% less power when idle compared to gaming notebooks packed with older generation DDR4 memory.

With this announcement, Samsung also commenced expanding its largest 10-nanometer class DRAM line-up including 16Gb LPDDR4, 16Gb GDDR5, and 16Gb DDR4. This will open a new era of 16Gb DRAM products in mobile, graphics, PC and server segments as well as other markets including automotive systems and supercomputers.
