It's been a rocky launch season for NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 20-series of GPUs. Despite incorporating groundbreaking proprietary technology for real-time raytracing, shader design and post-processing techniques, a stratospheric price and spotty in-game support led to RTX becoming more of a meme than a successful marketing label. Time and tide wait for no man however; even though a tiny number of games actually support RTX features to any great degree, NVIDIA look set to bring RTX to their mainstream x60 SKU.
Rumours of a GeForce RTX 2060 have been persistent for the last couple of weeks, including a variant from GIGABYTE that was pictured last week and a slew of leaked specifications and benchmarks. Still more evidence was thrown on the mounting pile however due to the leak of official NVIDIA RTX 2060 branding material that was allegedly sent to partner AIB manufacturers recently.
That information comes from Andreas Schilling on Twitter, who has had a part in a number of leaks over the years. In the same tweet he confirmed the frame buffer size of the RTX 2060 as 6GB, which lines up with other evidence uncovered to date, and an expected launch day of the second week in January (coinciding with CES 2019).
Two key metrics remain unknown: performance, and price. NVIDIA have charged a premium for RTX-enabled silicon, silicon that doesn't necessarily perform up to the same level as similarly priced GTX 10-series cards in non-RTX titles. The RTX 2060 will be a litmus test for whether RTX technologies are realistically going to be a part of mainstream gaming in this generation.
