Tuesday February 28th is likely to be a big day for PC technology, and that's not just because of a certain red-hued product event. GPU heavyweights NVIDIA are also hosting their own invite-only event and livestream on this day, on the eve of GDC, and are dropping some not too subtle hints of what they're going to announce. The livestream, tagged as #ULTIMATEGEFORCE, is just the latest where NVIDIA have broadcast directly to the public rather than through the slow drop of news sites.
Clearly NVIDIA are teasing a high-end 'Ti-class' GPU unveiling, but confirmation that the card will almost certainly be the GeForce GTX 1080Ti appeared when erstwhile investigators viewed the page source (such as the folks over at ThinkComputers). Listed plain as day was the background image of the overlay - GTX1080Ti_Countdown_FinalFrame_optimized-new.png - which pretty much let the cat out of the bag. There's no use looking right now however, NVIDIA have updated the filename to something more innocuous.
Whilst the GeForce GTX 1080Ti may be unveiled during the livestream, it's probably unrealistic to expect immediate retail availability. At the very least however specifications and pricing should be clarified, including the GPU model (anticipated to be the GP102, similar to the Pascal-based GTX TITAN X), clock speeds and video memory used.
Depending on the price of the 1080Ti NVIDIA may also choose to adjust the positioning of the rest of the range, especially the flagship GTX 1080 and 1070. You might want to hold off buying a new graphics card until the end of the month, at the earliest.
The NVIDIA Pre-GDC livestream begins on February 29th at 3am GMT (7pm Pacific, 10pm Eastern on February 28th), and you'll be able to find it at twitch.tv/nvidia.
