Leading peripheral manufacturer Logitech have announced the acquisition of StreamLabs, developer of software tools for streamed video content broadcasts. The deal, which is worth $89m plus a further $29m in Logitech stock options subject to achieving performance targets, extends Logitech's position as a major player in the maturing personal live streaming industry.

Logitech's consumer and prosumer webcams have been a fixture of livestreaming from its nascent years prior to its emergence as a multi-million dollar industry. In July of 2018 they acquired Blue Microphones, makers of the Yeti microphone that has been almost ubiquituous in entry-level streaming setups, in a $117m tie-up.

OBS is StreamLabs' centerpiece product, a broadcasting tool that well over a million users take advantage of daily. A comprehensive plug-in and widget suite can manage overlays and donations, while the app store offers more exotic features created by independent developers. The software is monetised via the app store and a premium subscription service with pre-made art and other templates.

“Logitech’s acquisition of Streamlabs adds software and tools for live streamers to our already rich gaming offering. Their products complement our existing portfolio and allow us to serve even more game streamers around the world with better experiences.”

- Ujesh Desai, general manager and vice president of Logitech's gaming business

The deal is unlikely to change day to day operations at either company in the short term, but we wouldn't be surprised if the two combined their software and hardware expertise in new and innovative ways in the long term.
