AMD have rounded out April with yet another update to the Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition driver package, but this time targeted support isn't for a new game or proprietary feature. Instead, the driver lays the groundwork for Microsoft's Windows 10 April 2018 update, which brings the Timeline feature to their desktop OS.
Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.4.1 was AMD's only major GPU driver update in April, a month where focus shifted to desktop CPUs and new major game releases on the PC platform were few and far between. That's in contrast to the four new drivers in March, when every week seemingly had a Triple-A launch on the calender. Hopefully the driver team enjoyed a well-deserved breather.
Timeline is a major feature rolling out with the Windows 10 April 2018 Update
Primarily RSAE 18.4.1 is listed as providing 'initial support for the Windows 10 April 2018 Update', an update that became available yesterday and is scheduled to be automatically applied to desktop PCs on May 8th. As a consequence it may be sensible to apply this driver sooner rather than later, so long as no major issues with it are uncovered.
In addition to the Windows Update support, RSAE 18.4.1 takes the opportunity to fix some of the known issues in the driver team's in-tray. As always however implementing bug-fixes are something of a Sisyphean effort, with new bugs identified for squashing in this as in almost every prior Radeon Software update. Still, those affected by the water texture glitches in Final Fantasy XV or Radeon ReLive recording failures will no-doubt be appreciative.
The abridged release notes are reproduced below. This driver update is available for 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows 10 and 7 (the latter of which requires Service Pack 1), and support desktop GPUs of the GCN family (HD7700-series and later). Note however that Vega graphics on Raven Ridge APUs are not supported by this driver.
