A next-generation Intel Cascade Lake-X high-end desktop processor appears at Geekbench. The i9-10900X will be part of Intel’s refined Cascade Lake-X line-up, to be included in Intel’s upcoming X299 refresh. The Intel Core i9-10900X with 10 cores and 20 threads took a shot with Geekbench on a Dell Precision 5820 Tower Desktop PC delivering a single-core score of 5,204 and a multi-core score of 39,717. The Intel Core i9-10900X will be part of Intel’s 10th generation processor offerings that will go head-to-head with AMD’s second- and third-generation Ryzen Threadripper processors. See Geekbench scores on the screenshot below.

The Intel Core i9-10900X is likely below the £1,000 price range given the tougher competition coming from the AMD camp. A third-generation AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor, codenamed AMD Sharktooth with 32 cores and 64 threads, already gave leaked Geekbench scores that are far superior to the Intel Core i9-10900X and the current-generation Intel Core i9-9980XE processor having a single-core score of 5,932 and a multi-core score of 93,344.

Update: Intel Core i9-10980XE Also Appears in Geekbench

A day later, the next-generation Intel HEDT flagship processor, Intel Core i9-10980XE, also appeared in Geekbench. The Intel Core i9-10980XE packs 18 cores and 36 threads. The Intel Core i9-10980XE was validated using a Dell Precision 5820 Tower Desktop PC as well, likely the same system used with the Intel Core i9-10900X. The Intel Core i9-10980XE achieved a single-core score of 5,381 and a multi-core score of 51,514.

Intel will be in a much tougher battle as the Intel Core i9-10900X does not only go head-to-head with the third-generation Ryzen Threadripper processors but also the upcoming AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 16-core, 32-thread mainstream desktop processor which made impressive Geekbench scores with a single-core score of 6,714 and multi-core score of 64,953. However, AMD pulled away from being the ‘value option’ with the third-generation AMD Ryzen and AMD X570 motherboards as building a system with it comes with a steeper price compared to AMD’s previous-generation offerings based on the launch price. Still, we could expect a more competitive desktop processor market for both the mainstream and HEDT desktop platforms in the days ahead.
