Today is a very important milestone for Fractal Design as they release their fifth instalment to the much-loved Define Series. In this exclusive interview we caught up with FD's Brand Manager, Heili Toome to get the inside information and passion behind this exciting new Define R5.

Vortez
Hi Heili, how would you define the core value of Fractal Design products?

Heili, Fractal Design
Let me start by telling you that Fractal Design’s core concept is to provide products with an extraordinary level of design, without compromising the important factors of quality, functionality and price. This is the foundation or the start of any new product design.

Back in 2008 Fractal Design hit the market for the first time with Silent Series case fans and the first generation Newton PSU. In the following years, we continued to build our product range of cases, launching the Define Series in 2009, Arc and Core Series in 2011, Node Series in 2012 and Kelvin water cooling line up earlier this year.

When launching a new product or range within a family, Fractal Design very much focuses on making it a smooth delivery, which means that all departments, Product Development, Marketing, Sales, Service, all work together in an effort to bring to market a product that is refined, well-thought out and something we are very proud of. As well, the birth of a new product does not only involve the Fractal Design team; we are very dedicated to the community and our customers and love to hear what you have to say. We take this collection of feedback and input it into our initial concept and discovery phase.

Vortez
Talking about products, do you have news for us today?

Heili, Fractal Design
Yes, today is a big day for Fractal Design! We are proud to announce the next generation of the worldwide, award winning Define Series. Fractal Design Define R5 is here!

As you know the Define Series of cases focuses on delivering the perfect balance between silent computing and minimalistic design. After the huge success following the Define R4, along with lots of community feedback, the Define R5 is born. We really put a lot of research into what we could improve or include in the R5 to make it the ultimate silent case, but still give end users the wide range of choices when it comes to build configurations. The water-cooling support in the R5 is awesome – you can fit radiators up to 420mm into this ATX case! As well, there is more dense sound absorbing material throughout the case, updated ModuVent™ fan vents that are revamped as far as design and functionality goes, and new Dynamic Series fans, which are not on the market yet. We are very excited and proud of the final product and we hope that all you feel the same!

Vortez
Why did FD focus on a new version within the Define Series?

Heili, Fractal Design
We had a busy year this year with new designs and product ranges. Earlier this year we launched the new Node 804 of the Node Series, the all-new Core X3 and X5 families within the Core Series, followed by a completely new product range – the Kelvin Series – Fractal Design’s first open-loop water-cooling units which will be available in December. And actually within the next week and a half, we will be launching a lot of cool content around Kelvin and water-cooling. Stay tuned!

Since the launch of the Define R4 two years ago, it remained one of our most popular cases and top sellers, winning dozens of awards from media and partners within the industry for its silent-computing and Scandinavian, sleek design. However, the IT industry is a highly dynamic world, and Fractal Design is constantly working to create and adapt products to meet the ever-evolving world of technology and end user desires. This is how the project of the Define R5 was born.

So now we come to the Define R5 to cap off this busy year, just in time for the holiday season. We hope this will be a very warm welcome by our fans and enthusiast end users.

Vortez
Some people may ask why the Define R5 is so similar to Define R4? Can you comment on this?

Heili, Fractal Design
As you can maybe deduce from the naming, each evolution of the Define Series is a Revision, hence R3, R4, R5…We strongly believe and have received confirmation from the community that the design element of the Define cases are part of its success. The idea is to keep this minimalistic, popular design and build on this foundation with new and improved features and functions. If we were to completely change the design of the Define case, then it would no longer be a Define case. Why change something that works so well?

Each case family we launch has its niche and place in the market. We try to keep things simple and easy to understand when it comes to what each product family offers. For example, if a customer is looking to build an HTPC, home server or entertainment deck, then a case from the Node Series would be a great fit. Just like if someone is looking to build a silent PC, whether it’s for gaming, work-use, music studio PC, whatever the need – a Define case is the case for you.

Vortez
What are some of the key features of the Define R5?

Heili, Fractal Design
The Define R5 features extensive water cooling support for a case of its size; we included two new Fractal Design Dynamic GP14 140mm fans developed for superlative airflow while still maintaining low noise levels. Cooling potential is fantastic in the R5.

The dust filters cover front and bottom air intakes and are easy to access from the front of the case; The front door is now dual side mounting to better fit different working spaces; The SSD mounts have also been upgraded and feature innovative new brackets with a tool-free installation and removal; The new and innovative Quick Release System on the left side of the case provides secure mounting of the left side panel, yet grants quick and easy access to the system - All this and much, much more for a fair affordable price. We hope that people can see how much value is packed into the Define R5 case for an MSRP of £82.99 ($109.99 USD).

Vortez
What are Fractal Design’s expectations with the Define R5?

Heili, Fractal Design
It’s really simple. We developed the R5 for the customer so we hope the success of the Define Series will continue to grow and that we brought you a case that meets all your demands and needs.

Vortez
Thank you Heili for answering our questions. Any concluding words?
