AMD's Ryzen 7 5800X3D - the revolutionary new CPU equipped with 64MB of stacked 3D V-Cache that's anticipated to launch this Spring - may have had some of the proverbial wind taken out of its sails before a single chip reaches the hands of enthusiasts. Multiple reports are stating this week that the processor won't support overclocking at launch, with AMD apparently going as far as asking motherboard manufacturers to explicitly disable the option in BIOS. Although this won't faze mainstream owners, enthusiasts who wanted to push the silicon to the ragged edge will already be feeling deflated.

The rumour sourced from the Chinese Chiphell forum was reported this morning by Videocardz.com and later confirmed by TechPowerUp. According to TPU AMD supplied the following succinct note to motherboard manufacturers, who would have had UEFI BIOS updates in development at the time: "5800X3D 8C16T 100-xxxxxxxxx 105 W AGESA: PI 1206b 1/28 Please hide Vermeer-X CPU OC BIOS SETUP options".



AMD apparently didn't offer any motivation for disabling overclocking. It would make the Ryzen 7 5800X3D one of vanishingly few desktop Ryzen designs to not support a feature which is effectively standard across the range.

It has been speculated that the overall 5800X3D package might be exceptionally close to its thermal 'sweet spot' in shipped specifications due to the additional heat generated by the 3D V-Cache or temperature sensitivities in the new components. If that the case then the Precision Boost/PBO dynamic overclocking parameters are also likely to be equivalently tight. There's no indication thus far that any 'outside of spec' problems will impact achieving their claims of 'up-to 20% higher performance than Intel's Core i9-12900K' in selected benchmarks, but at the very least it seems that the red team are holding to the adage of 'better safe than sorry' for this particular release.

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is expected to launch on April 20th with an MSRP of $449.
